Frequently Asked

Questions, answered.

How much time does the program require each week?
Plan on 4–6 hours per week. That breaks down into one mandatory live virtual session (1 hour), 1–2 hours of pre-work or self-study, and about 2 hours for triad meetings and applied "leader challenges." Week 8 includes your final capstone presentation.
Do I need previous leadership experience to apply?
No. We look for leadership potential, not titles. Many of our strongest applicants describe leadership through caregiving, community involvement, mentorship, or starting something on their own. Your application is your chance to tell that story.
What counts as a STEM major?
Any field within science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. That includes biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, data science, information systems, all engineering disciplines, mathematics, statistics, environmental science, neuroscience, biomedical sciences, and related fields. If you're unsure, apply anyway and note your major in the eligibility section.
Is the program really free?
Yes. LeadershipU is fully funded by The Dara Ashley Foundation and our partners. There is no cost to participants. Top 3 winners also have all conference and travel expenses covered.
How are the Top 3 performers selected?
A panel of industry leaders evaluates capstone presentations on four criteria: innovation and originality, integration of at least three program sessions, leadership presence and delivery, and the real-world feasibility of your proposed solution.
What if I'm graduating before December 2026?
Applicants must be enrolled as undergraduates with an anticipated graduation date of December 2026 or later. If you're graduating before then, follow us on social media. We'll have post-graduate opportunities and alumni programming.
Can I edit my application after I submit?
No. Once you submit, the application is final. Please review every section carefully and have your essays proofread before you hit submit.
How long does the application take?
Plan on 30–45 minutes once your transcript and resume are ready. There are five essay prompts at 300–500 words each. We recommend drafting essays in a separate document first.
